Distorpia is the brain child of Adam Barry. It all began with sketches. Lots of sketches. Usually quick and raw gestures that only take minutes. In that short time a personality emerges. These distorted characters began to fill sketchbooks. Still, they were seen as nothing more than warm-ups. It wasn’t until Adam heard “You should do something with these!” multiple times that he came up with a plan for the oddities to come to life.
To that end, the unusual artist path of learning 3D was chosen. The idea was to take the very energetic sketches and make them into something physical. A standard process has proved elusive as each character seems to have a unique set of challenges and will usually go through several iterations before clicking.
Once the design is ready, characters are printed in resin then painted. Resin, a lesser used version of 3D printing picks up small details while defying gravity. The figures are then painted with a combination of airbrush, by hand, or acrylic pour.
Currently there are 30 figure designs and quickly growing. Going from a stack of sketchbooks to a world with dimensionality and myth.
